Katarzyna Surmiak-Domańska

Journalist of the department of commentary at Gazeta Wyborcza. In 1980 she played the title role in the series for youth “Tylko Kaśka”. Graduate of Romance philology from the University of Warsaw. In the years 1993-1994 she hosted radio programmes dedicated to classical music at the Warsaw radio, Radio Mozart. She is permanently connected to Gazeta Wyborcza as of 1995. She mainly works in the social field. Her commentaries and discussions are published mainly in the additions to “Gazeta Wyborcza”: “Duży Format” and “Wysokie Obcasy”. She often describes the fate of the lonely, experiencing personal dramas, difficult family relations, often rejected by society. She is drawn to complex stories, escaping simple judgement. Among her heroes there was: an officer of the Polish Army – a transvestite; a man who killed his parents; a girl, who was her father’s lover, at the consent of the mother; transsexual parents; children of homosexuals; people, who have experienced the trauma of Irish Catholic professional schools. In November, in the anthology of the Polish commentary 1989-2009 titled “20”, prepared by the publisher Czarne, her interview with the Polish homophobe-nationalist will appear. Mother of 9-year-old Julia. She lives a little in Warsaw and a little in Puszcza Białowieska.
