Born in 1951 in Poznań. Political emigrant, left to Sweden in 1969 after the anti-Semitic campaign of Gomułka’s party. Historian of ideas (University in Stockholm), from 1989 member of editorial office of the Swedish daily “Dagens Nyheter”. In the years 1994-95 in the editorial office of the monthly “Moderna Tider”. In 1997 he publicised the case of forced sterilisation, which the state of Sweden conducted in the years 1935-1976 on thousands of “undesired” citizens, mainly women, single mothers of many children, the homeless, etc. As a result of these texts, the victims of forced sterilisation were paid over SEK 250 million in compensation. The series of commentaries on earning migration “The Polish Plumber” (2005) and on the UNO mission in Kosovo – “Kolonia Kosovo” (2007) appeared in a few languages, among others, in Polish. Member of PEN Club and the Helsinki Committee. Degree honoris causa of the University of Lund. Decorated by the Polish government with the medal of 25 years of Solidarność (2005); by Swedish institutes, among others, the Great Journalist Award (2006), Journalist of the Year Award in the field of economy (2006), as well as the Special Swedish Academy Award (2007).
