Outstanding translator of belles lettres, literary critic, essayist. She studied French and German philology and philosophy at the University of Warsaw. She translates belles-lettres and philosophic literature from German, including writers such as: Georg Simmel, Patrick Süskind, Theodor W. Adorno, Jürgen Habermas, Hermann Hesse, Frederick Nietzsche. She debuted in 1975 as a translator in the Literatura na Świecie monthly. She was an activist of the democratic opposition in years 1976-1989 and an editor of Tygodnik Solidarność in 1981. During the martial law, she was interned. She published a volume of literary sketches Rubryka pod różą (Column under the Rose) (2007). She is a member of the jury of the Gdynia Literary Award and a laureate of recognised translation awards, including: the Literatura na Świecie Award (2001), the Hermann Hesse Award (2008) and the award for special contribution to the development of Polish-German relations (2009). She co-operates on a regular basis with a number of magazines: Literatura na Świecie, Znak and Zeszyty Literackie. In November her latest work – a translation of the correspondence between Celan and Bachmann Czas serca (Heart-Time) – will be published. She lives in Warsaw.

At the Conrad Festival, she will participate in a meeting Akin by Choice: Bachmann-Celan in the National Museum on 6 November (Saturday), at 4.00 p.m.
